Primary Election
The Primary Election is an election to determine which candidates will qualify for the General Election for a given party. In Iowa you must be a member of the political party of which you wish to vote for in order to participate. This is known as a "closed primary." The primary election is held on the 1st Tuesday following the 1st Monday in June of each even-numbered year.

Tuesday, March 24 - First Day to Submit Absentee Request
Wednesday, May 13 - First Day Absentee Voting begins in Auditor's Office
Monday, May 18 - Voter Pre-Registration Deadline
Deadline to Request Absentee Ballot be mailed
Saturday, May 30 - Auditor's Office open
Monday, June 1 - Last day to Vote Absentee in Auditor's Office
Primary Write In Winner with no candidate on ballot:
The Party would need 35% of votes casted the last time office was on ballot for the party.
EX: Last election with candidate - total votes cast for party was 1996
This year a write in recieved 435
1996 X 35% = 698.60 , The write in with 435 did not reach the threashold and would not be automatically put on the General Ballot.
